OFFSHORE ISLANDS![]() The Republic of Cuba is an archipelago, that is to say, a group of islands that forms part of the National territory along with its adjacent waters. Cuba is the principal island and around it there are four main groups of islands. Los Colorados along the north east coast of the Pinar del Rio Province. Sabana Camaguey also known as Jardines del Rey north of Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spirtus, Ciego de Avila and Camaguey. Jardines de la Reina South of Ciego de Avila and Camaguey. Los Canarreos South of Matanzas, Habana and Pinar del Rio. Among the small islands the most outstanding for the importance in tourism and ecology are: Cayo Levisa, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco, Cayo Saetia and Cayo Las Brujas. Cayo Largo This beautiful island located to the south of the Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea, is only 175 Km from Havana and 170 from Varadero. Cayo Largo Cayo Largo is in the Canarreos Archipelago; it is 1 km in its wider part, has an area of 37.5 sq Km and is 27Km long, which is also the complete length of its beaches. Apart from having a marvelous history, where the settlement of the first Cuban Indian Siboneyes tribes, descendant from the Arauca Indians, Cayo Largo was visited by Christopher Colombus in 1494 and by famous pirates like John Hawkins, Jean Lafitte Latrobe, Pepe El Mallorquin and Henry Morgan between 1565 and 1820. Also a shipwreck happened in Cayo Largo shores in 1600 with a precious treasure belonging to the famous corsair Bartolome the Portuguese. The average temperature is 26ºC, with 8 hours of tropical sunshine, with these conditions you’ll have to admit that Cayo Largo is easily the paradise of holidaymakers. Different species of fauna representatives can be found in Cayo Largo, such as the Iguanas, Colibries, Tortoises, Sea Gulls, Coruas, Shellfishes and Pelicans. Cayo Largo is the ideal land to recover what has been forgotten because of daily routine, to fall in love, or simply to recover lost inspiration; to live passionately like it is always done in Caribbean lands. Cayo Coco This portion of the Ciego de Ávila territory was named after the large population of white ibis (mostly known as coco bird), also identified as the "island of flamingos", due to the large colony of pink flamingos that lives on the south side of the key, providing an unusual and unforgettable great show for those who travel to the key by the causeway, where they can be seen very closely from La Silla lookout, preferably very early in the morning or at sunset. Cayo Coco, with an already solid hotel infrastructure, has 22 kilometers of beaches of fine sand and greenish transparent waters, located in a practically virgin environment where forests and other plant formations cover near 90% of the territory. As well as several inside lagoons, which provide an ideal habitat for many species of its fauna and two interesting Interpretative pathways: the dune of Loma del Puerto and Las Dolinas. A visit to La Güira, where you can see a reproduction of the way of living of the charcoal workers who lived in the center of the key at the beginning of the XX century; A dinner at the Rocarena Restaurant; or a party night at La Cueva del Jabalí (Wild Pig's Cave) are proposals that can not be avoided in Cayo Coco, a place where lovers of Scuba Diving and nautical activities have all necessary conditions for full enjoyment. Cayo Guillermo A small isle, of merely 13 square Km of surface which was immortalized by Novel Prize Ernest Hemingway and his work "Islands in the Stream", when he described how green and promising this place looked to him. Its three beaches and among them Playa Pilar, considered the most beautiful one of the archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, have a total length of four kilometers and the scenic value is reinforced by the existence of other natural elements, like the highest dunes in the Caribbean, which reach up to 15 meters. The keys Media Luna and Los Felipes, located in front of the coasts of Cayo Guilermo, are two of the major potentials for the practice of Scuba Diving, and platform and High-Seas Fishing in Jardines del Rey, a tourism region which has in Cayo Paredón Grande another significant attraction. Here you can enjoy a splendid landscape from the Diego Velázquez Lighthouse, built more than a century ago on a rocky headland and that still renders navigation services, or the kindness of Los Pinos Beach. Although, if you have a preference for Scuba Diving, it would be ideal to go to the Coral Reef located to the north of the isle, which has less than 6 km2 of surface. Cayo Santa Maria From Caibarién, a town of fishermen surrounded by deep waters with important lobster farms, a cause way on the sea more than 48 kilometers long links the north keys to the mainland; two of them: Las Brujas (with a small aerodrome) and Santa María already have facilities for accommodation. Cayo Santa María, baptized as the white rose of Jardines del Rey, is merely 13 kilometers long. It is mostly covered by excellent beaches of very fine sand; clean, quiet and transparent waters; where the sea bottom –with abundant formations of Coral and a great diversity of sea species– invite visitors to practice Scuba Diving and under water photo shooting. In the environment of the keys of the north of Villa Clara itself, it is possible to find interesting proposals for the lovers of nature tourism and archeology in the caves of Pelo de Oro or El Muñeco. As well as planning excursions to the near Faro Caimán Grande (Caimán Grande Lighthouse) or the San Pascual Molasses ship, an authentic relic of naval industry, this is today a floating hotel.
